As well as contributing to global warming and poor air quality, sulphur emissions are responsible for acid rain which impacts agriculture and marine life. And the marine sector is a very significant producer of SO2 emissions.Shipping traditionally used fuels which are high in sulphur levels. With almost 3.8 million barrels of oil consumed per day through various shipping vessels, it doesn't take much calculation to realise how much of the greenhouse gases are actually released into the atmosphere.&nbsp;In order to limit the emissions from ships, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has taken measures to limit SO2 emissions.Introduction of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Sulphur Regulations 2020In 2016, the IMO set limits on the sulphur in fuel oil used onboard ships operating outside the&nbsp;designated emission control areas (ECAS), to be reduced to 0.50% m/m (mass by mass). Already there has been a limit of 0.10% m/m already in effect in pre-established emission control areas, which includes the Baltic Sea area; the North Sea area; the coastal areas of the United States and Canada.<a href="https://cogoport.com/signup/en-IN/?utm_source=web&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=general" target="_blank"><img src="https://cdn.cogoport.io/cms-prod/cogo_public/vault/original/Blog-Banner-Portal-3.png" width="auto" style="width: auto; height: auto;"></a>The regulations take effect in 2020.How will the ships meet these regulations?&nbsp;Most of the responsibility to meet IMO 2020 regulations lies with the carriers, who must ensure that their fleets comply with the rules. They will have three main options:<ol><li>Purchasing cleaner and low-level sulphur fuel:&nbsp;Instead of using High Sulphur Fuel Oils (HSFO), Marine Gas or Diesel Oils (MGO) can be used. However, the cost of MGOs can up to 50% more than the HSFO oils that are already being used.</li><li>Installation of 'Scrubbers':&nbsp;'Scrubbers' or gas cleaning systems can be installed to remove Sulphur Oxides before emission. However, since these scrubbers are made by a limited number of manufacturers around the world. The resulting cost of installation would be around $5 to $10 million.&nbsp;</li><li>Switching to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG):&nbsp;Ships can switch to using lower sulphur fuels such as LNG, in order to meet regulations. However, fitting the large LNG tanks takes up almost 3% of the vessel's TEU slots, reducing the number of containers a ship can carry. You can also expect a drastic increase in the demand for LNG fuels.</li><li>Slow steaming:&nbsp;Shipping lines may extend&nbsp;'slow steaming', the process of deliberately slowing down the ship's speed to cut the volumes of fuels used from one port to another. However, this naturally extends transit times.</li></ol>Switching to a new fuel to comply with the regulations will add $11 billion in expenses to carriers' balance sheets, according to an article by <a href="https://www.supplychaindive.com/news/imo2020-new-sulfur-rules-could-affect-capacity-drewry/564642/" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(10, 10, 10);">Supply Chain Dive</a>.Seems like an expensive and almost impossible challenge right? But some of the big names in the industry are already making their move. Here's what some of the notable names are doing:Hapag Lloyd's CEO also mentioned that they are expecting their low sulfur fuel costs to be around USD 75-100 million for the IMO2020 implementation date of 1st January 2020. Jörg Erdmann, Senior Director of Hapag Lloyd, said, "We are prepared, as our fleet will operate using compliant fuels by 1st January 2020. In addition, we are testing other options, and Hapag-Lloyd will be the first shipping company to convert a large container ship to climate-friendly liquefied natural gas."MSC estimated that the cost of the various changes that will need to be made to its fuel supply and their fleet is over two billion dollars (USD) per yearCMA CGM&nbsp;will receive its nine 22,000-TEU container ships powered by LNG from 2020. Containerships, a subsidiary of CMA CGM Group, had already started ordering container ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2018.&nbsp;Maersk line recently secured a deal between Maersk Oil Trading and Koole Terminals in Rotterdam, which will provide them with 5-10% of their low sulphur fuel demand. International Container Shipping - Export Process

Bilateral trade between India and Pakistan is one of the greatest missed opportunities in South Asia. In August 2019, Pakistan downgraded diplomatic relations with India and ceased trading altogether. The neighbours have turned their backs on any short-term trade benefits. However, the situation wasn’t always so.<a href="https://cogoport.com/signup/en-IN/?utm_source=web&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=general" target="_blank"><img src="https://cdn.cogoport.io/cms-prod/cogo_public/vault/original/Blog-Banner-Portal-3.png" width="auto" style="width: auto; height: auto;"></a>The two countries share a long list of disputes – border control of Kashmir, rights to Indus river water, four wars, financial settlements from the Partition, and most recently, terrorist attacks and counter-offensives. As a result, trade between the two countries suffers. Trade depends on diplomatic and mutually beneficial relations. Political disputes are bad news for bilateral trade.<h3>Latent Potential</h3>The extensively shared land border with road and railway connectivity lends itself to a lot more trade. The shipping routes also contribute. The ports of Mumbai and Karachi are a mere 589 nautical miles through the Arabian Sea, but the political landscape trumps the physical proximity.Disproportionate costs, trade barriers, high levels of informal traffic, complicated non-tariff measures and a long list of product restrictions are contributing factors. The two countries account for 88% of South Asia’s GDP and 86% of its population. Both would benefit from a renewal of trade ties.As of 2018, the potential for reciprocal trade between the two Indus valley nations stands at a whopping $37billion, according to a World Bank report. But in 2017-18, the total value of trade between the two was a mere $2.4billion. This volume accounted for a meagre 0.31% of India’s total trade with the world and just about 3.2% of Pakistan’s global trade, points out India’s pink paper The Economic Times. The missed opportunity is massive.<a href="https://api.whatsapp.com/message/N4CI7UNDFE2ZM1?autoload=1&amp;app_absent=0&amp;utm_source=web&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=general" target="_blank"><img src="https://cdn.cogoport.io/cms-prod/cogo_public/vault/original/Blog Banner WA 3.png" width="auto" style="width: auto; height: auto;"></a>So, why aren’t they trading?As of mid-2019, tensions are heightened.In response to the Indian government’s revocation of Article 370 that ended Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, Pakistan severed trade ties with India.But Pakistan’s radical decisions don’t necessarily put it at the losing end. India surpasses Pakistan’s population by over a billion people. The actual effect of this trade embargo on Pakistan’s economy is insignificant when its GDP per capita comes into play.The reality is that both countries are not major trading partners for each other. In comparison with their respective global trade, the inter-Indus trade is insignificant.Pakistan trades heavily with the US, China, Afghanistan and the UK. India, its next-door neighbour, makes number 13 on this list. It also ran a trade deficit with India at a value of $1.6billion at the time of suspension. So, that might be a blow to the economy, but it will only be temporary. At the same time, India trades with the US, UAE, China and Singapore. Pakistan doesn’t even make its top 15 trading partners.India is the rising star of Asia. With the highest rate of predicted GDP growth, rising middle class and smartphone penetration, it should be the go-to destination for any trading partner. India is providing impetus to its economy to deliver on growth predictions. It is busy forging new partnerships with other Asian countries while Pakistan is focusing on strengthening ties with the middle east.One thing is for sure, if the two countries were to set their differences aside and resume trade, they would both walk away as winners.

India-Pakistan Political Dispute: Affect on Trade

I’m diving straight into what caught my eye this past week. Even so, the news will be particularly concerning for an economy that has yet to experience the full force of its trade war with the US. And with October seeing the fifth successive month of contraction in terms of new export orders, the manufacturing sector is getting nervous.”→ Chinese economy slowing faster than expected – worst yet to comeWhat goes for the air, goes for the seas as well. There may be delays with ships going to or coming from the UK if there is no contingency plan.“The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called for urgent action by the UK and the European Union to put in place contingency planning for the continuation of air services in the event of a “no-deal Brexit,” and to move much faster to bring certainty to three critical air transport issues:<ul><li>The uninterrupted continuation of air connectivity;</li><li>The framework for regulating safety and security; and</li><li>The policies and processes needed for efficient border management”</li></ul>In My OpinionThe last few weeks there has been a lot of talk about the IMO, with slow steaming and decarbonization of fuels at the top of the list. The responses to the various measures they are taking are mixed. The IMO is now further focusing on sustainability efforts for the international shipping community, by attacking the plastic soup. CMA CGM Peak Season Surcharge: India to Nigeria

In August 2017, on behest of the traders dealing in urad and moong dal, the Union Government had placed import restrictions of up to 3 lakh MT on the whole/raw variety. The restriction on import for the said pulses had been placed to stabilise market prices which had fallen below the MSP set by the Government.&nbsp;On May 4th, 2018, the Government has further extended the cover of import restriction to include the split variety and other forms of urad and moong dal.Based on the latest notification issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT),&nbsp; split, processed and other varieties of urad and moong dal are also included in the import restriction list.
